Montessori Material

Frequently Asked Questions.
General:
Our philosophy at Modern Montessori School follows the path laid out by Dr. Maria Montessori: a sensorial experience with concrete, hands-on Montessori materials. We carefully observe and follow your child’s development as he/she is given key, age-appropriate lessons from our certified Montessori teachers. Our focus is on nurturing the whole child, and encouraging your child’s natural love of learning. Just as Maria Montessori did, we provide materials, lessons, and opportunities that promote independence, logical thinking, and a sense of accomplishment.
Program:
The first day of class starts on the first weekday of the calendar month.
We require that parent submit the enrollment application about 2 to 3 weeks prior to the first date of class.
This time allows us to:
- Schedule a one-on-one orientation to make sure your child's first day is smooth and stress free.
- Assess your child to ensure we provide a personalized education plan.
- Shipped out your child's first personalized material package so that it arrives on time for your child's first day of class.
Download our Enrollment Calendar PDF for more details on enrollment deadlines, and program start dates.
The Montessori curriculum is unique as it follows the child, offering personalized skill-appropriate learning opportunities. The curriculum areas at Modern Montessori School corresponds with the five curriculum areas laid out in the Montessori Method. In additional, Grace & Courtesy is taught to reflect modern social skills.
- Practical Life - Exercises are designed to foster a sense of independence through the child’s “work.” By receiving/practicing everyday self-care (spooning, buttoning, tying, etc.) and life skills lessons (setting the table, food preparation).
- Sensorial - Maria Montessori believed that children were “sensory learners.” She saw the importance of the manipulation of objects to aid the child in better understanding his/her environment. Through the child’s work with the Sensorial materials, the child is helped to make observations, abstractions, and distinctions in their surroundings.
- Language - Teacher and child communication, stories, and oral language games are an essential part of a child’s language learning. These activities are part of each day at Modern Montessori School. Further, the teacher offers extensive language experiences and “reading activities” using materials that are sequenced in a logical way, which reinforce and further develop the child’s phonetic growth.
- Math - Mathematics in the Montessori environment offers hands-on, concrete experiences; each lesson isolating a single concept. The child is introduced to math concepts using specifically designed manipulative materials.
- Cultural - The cultural area of the curriculum involves providing your child with the opportunity to learn about the world around them. History, geography, botany, zoology, art and music are examples of the subjects that are part of the cultural curriculum instilling an appreciation for all living things.
- Grace & Courtesy - Teachers provide opportunities for children to develop and practice social skills, emotional awareness, and mindfulness. With the evolution of technology, it is also critical for children to learn and practice online etiquette in addition to traditional social skills and emotional confidence.
The children in our Modern Montessori classrooms are grouped just as they are in a traditional Montessori classroom, ages 3 through 5. Each class is composed of children within the 3-years mixed age grouping.
Modern Montessori School students will use traditional Montessori Materials that are provided through our material rental program. Materials are customized to need the needs of each child as well as the monthly curriculum. Material boxes are typically shipped bi-monthly to ensure each child is able to progress at their own pace.
